Harbhajan engineers SA collapse

Harbhajan Singh bagged a seven-wicket haul to help India move close to victory over South Africa in the second and final Test on Thursday.

The off-spinner finished with 7-87 as South Africa were bowled out for 222 on the final day to set an easy target of 117 for the home side after they conceded a 106-run first innings lead.

India had scored 36-1 by lunch and needed 81 more to win in two sessions.

Opener Gautam Gambhir (16) and Rahul Dravid (nine) were the not-out batsmen after the early dismissal of Virender Sehwag (10), who was caught by Graeme Smith at slip off Makhaya Ntini.

South Africa, 172-5 overnight, lost their remaining five wickets for just 50 runs as Harbhajan picked up three wickets on Thursday morning and leg-spinner Anil Kumble took two.

Harbhajan raised visions of victory early in the day when he dismissed Jacques Kallis (55) after the first-innings centurion had added just three to his overnight score.

Kallis was surprised by the bounce on a flighted delivery and gave an easy return catch to Harbhajan.

Shaun Pollock, who became only the fifth player in Test history to get a double of 3 000 runs and 300 wickets when he scored six runs, fell to a bad decision.

Umpire Daryl Harper declared the batsman caught at short leg but replays showed the ball did not hit the bat nor was the catch by Gambhir taken cleanly.

The remaining batsmen could do little and South Africa were all out in just 72 minutes of play on Thursday morning.

Kumble, who dismissed Thami Tsolekile and Ntini, equalled all-rounder Kapil Dev’s Indian Test record of 434 Test wickets.

South Africa, who won both Tests on their last tour here in 2000, had won three of their six previous Tests on Indian soil.

They lost two and drew the first match of this series in Kanpur last week. – Sapa-AFP
