Ajax clean up in final minute

Ajax Cape Town had to wait until the 89th minute before they gained a 1-0 win and maximum points in their Premier League game against Golden Arrows at a wind-swept Athlone Stadium on Friday night.

Brent Carlse’s 20m drive after finally breaking through gave Arrows goalkeeper Daniel Phiri no chance.

Ajax lost a golden opportunity to get a lead in the 16th minute when Wilfred Mugeyi put over a low cross from the left; then Ashley Opperman missed a sitter from 5m.

The visitors were making good use of the south-easter and in the 28th minute, when Hendrik Henyekane broke down the left and with two players waiting in the middle, he shot straight at Moneeb Josephs.

A minute later, Josephs brought off a point-blank save from Thulani Ndlovu.

The visitors were unlucky in the 40th minute when Henyekane tried to lob the ball over a hesitant Josephs, but it bounced off the cross bar.

On the hour, sub Franklyn Cale’s shot was saved by a diving Phiri and six minutes later Phiri tipped Bradley August’s 30m drive over the cross bar. — Sapa
