Singapore gets its first snowman

Three students in sweltering Singapore realised their dream of seeing a snowman by scouring the internet for information and constructing the city-state’s first one, the trio said on Friday.

Undeterred by the perpetual heat and humidity, Andy Tan (22) and his two colleagues, Tan Ti Hong and Marcus Lee, both 23, erected a 3m-tall snowman with a girth of 5,5m and weighing 2,5 tonnes.

To accomplish the feat, the three worked 120 hours in sub-zero temperatures inside Snow City, Singapore’s only indoor snow centre.

”We had never seen a real snowman in our lives, much less built one,” said Tan.

With the information he gleaned from the internet, a black hat was placed on top of the head and red scarf tied around the neck.

The snowman took 65 tubs of snow and cost nearly 5 000 Singapore dollars (about R17 400).

For the many other Singaporeans who have never laid eyes on a snowman, the giant one will be available for public viewing. — Sapa-DPA
