Jomo Cosmos eased their relegation woes when they beat a struggling Santos 2-0 in a Castle Premier Soccer League match played at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night. Santos, on the other hand, now face a real danger of being relegated.
Both goals were scored in the first half.
Santos did most of the attacking but none of their strikers appeared to know where the goals were. There were several volleys but they were well off target.
Santos had their first chance as early as the fourth minute but Mxolisi Mchunu’s good ground kick was saved by Avril Phali.
Twelve minutes later, Warren Budde cut in from the left and his low shot was brilliantly saved by Phali diving to his right.
Cosmos opened the score against the run of play when Nkosmathi Nhleko outran a square defence and easily rounded Brendon Wardle to score.
At the half-hour, Jason Lakay’s shot was saved by Phali.
Cosmos doubled the score in the 34th minute when Chris Katongo’s shot was not held by Wardle, and Clint Sephadi, following up, comfortably buried the ball.
Play was mostly confined to the midfield as both teams kicked aimlessly. Although the home side had more of the play and had many chances, poor finishing saw then end the match with a blank sheet. — Sapa
