The 35-year-old woman who slit the throat of a pensioner at the Cresta shopping centre in Johannesburg has attacked a fellow patient at the Sterkfontein mental hospital.
Kanellie Hazikonstandinou was committed to the hospital after a court found that she was not fit to stand trial for the murder of 81-year-old Maureen Naughtin.
Hazikonstandinou (35), a homeopathic practitioner, suffers from schizophrenia.
In January last year, she apparently refused to take medication while in the Tara mental hospital because of her belief in alternative medicine. She was then transferred to Sterkfontein hospital, from where she was released during May.
The attack on Naughtin took place in September.
In the latest attack, Hazikonstandinou reportedly struck on Sunday with a shard of glass from a broken window.
The victim suffered minor injuries and is in a stable condition.
Hazikonstandinou has since been heavily sedated and placed in isolation.
The Gauteng health department confirmed the incident, but would not comment further.
Spokesperson Popo Maja said a ”comprehensive statement” would be released later on Tuesday.
The Democratic Alliance has since expressed ”surprise” at the second attack by Hazikonstandinou.
”Questions remain as to why she was ever released in the first place [from Sterkfontein],” DA spokesperson Jack Bloom said. ”The Gauteng health department must get their act together on this issue.” — Sapa
