Nigeria’s two-time African champions Enyimba needed two extra-time goals against Ghana’s Confederation Cup winners Hearts of Oak to hold on to the Super Cup they won last year.
There were no goals after regulation time for either team, both of whom were depleted by the departure of top stars recently.
Enyimba proved to be the stronger of the two sides in extra time as they first took the lead through Mutiu Adegoke after seven minutes.
Adegoke was also involved in Enyimba’s second goal on 109 minutes when he
delivered the cross for Muri Ogunbiyi to head home past Hearts goalkeeper Saanie Mohamed.
Hearts captain Yaw Amankwa Mireku said his team were not disappointed they lost the game.
”We are not disappointed because Enyimba played very well and deserved their victory,” he said.
Last year, Enyimba defeated Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia by a lone goal scored by Bob Osim to lift their first African Super Cup trophy.
Both Enyimba and Hearts are involved in this year’s CAF Champions League with the Ghanaians set to tackle Nigerian double kings Dolphin in the first round of the championship early next month. – Sapa-AFP
