Carelse helps Ajax defeat Wits

A goal in each half by Brent Carelse saw Ajax Cape Town defeat Wits 2-1 in their Castle Premier League match at Newland on Wednesday. Ajax led 1-0 at the break.

Wits came back strongly in the second half, but solid defence by the Ajax defenders kept them out.

The home side came close in the 13th minute when Lunga Dlangudlangu crossed from the left, and Terror Santeni turned smartly, but his shot just passed the upright.

Two minutes later, Dominic Isaacs failed to clear a loose ball and Elsato Kapowezha’s powerful shot was brilliantly turned around the corner by goalkeeper Moeneed Josephs,

From the resulting corner, Carelse headed the ball off the goal line.

Ajax took the lead in the 18th minute when Isaacs put over a cross from the right, which was badly missed by the Wits defenders, and Carelse rose to head home.

In the 36th minute, Simon Makhubela came strongly through the centre as Josephs came out of his goal. Josephs handled the ball on the edge of the box and was booked for his trouble. Wits had a free kick that was cleared by the Ajax defenders.

Wits equalised in the 61st minute when they were awarded a dubious penalty that Charles Yohane converted.

Ajax regained the lead in the 79th minute when Dlangudlangu centred and Carelse headed home for his second goal. — Sapa
