SA diplomat assaulted in Botswana

A dinner party at the home of the South African deputy high commissioner to Botswana was ruined when guests were seriously assaulted in a robbery in Gaborone on Thursday.

High Commissioner Eunice Komane said her deputy Ben Joubert had invited three couples to his home for dinner.

Komane said the first couple had already arrived when five robbers came in behind the second couple, one holding a gun to the man’s head.

Three of the robbers were armed and the five set about assaulting and robbing the guests.

”They [Komane’s guests] were very badly assaulted and burnt with an iron.

”Everything they could lay their hands on was stolen, including jewellery, watches and wedding rings,” Komane said.

Joubert and his injured guests were treated but were not admitted to hospital.

Komane said a ”very large wave of crime” had recently hit the city of Gaborone, with the trend of undressing victims and ”ironing them” on the increase.

She said police were interviewing the victims and their investigation was underway. -Sapa
