World Cup team from ’95 relive the glory

South Africa’s Rugby World Cup squad from 1995 shared the magic of their historic triumph at a 10-Year celebration dinner held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday.

Captain Francois Pienaar and the full squad and management from the 1995 Rugby World Cup joined 1 500 prominent personalities and guests at an event aimed at reliving a momentous achievement in South Africa’s history.

”As players, we have never had a formal celebration of our victory together and this event was fundamentally a celebration of the magic we experienced. We wanted to share that magic with everyone,” said Pienaar.

”The full squad from 1995 was in attendance, as well as all the other people who were instrumental in our success, no matter how big or small their role was. And the proceeds of the evening will go to various charities, including the Reach for a Dream Foundation, the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players Fund, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.”

The evening’s entertainment included PJ Powers’ rendition of the World Cup anthem — the World in Union — and performances by the Soweto String Quartet. – Sapa
