Suicide bomb attacks hit Baghdad, Kirkuk

Sixteen people were killed and 39 wounded when a suicide bomber wearing a belt of explosives blew himself up early on Sunday outside an army recruitment centre in Baghdad, hospital and security sources said.

Most of the casualties were young men waiting to enlist.

The attack took place at the former Muthana airport recruitment centre, which has already been targeted by suicide bombers.

In another attack earlier this month, this time on police commando recruits in Baghdad, 11 were killed and 22 wounded.

Also on Sunday, a suicide car bomb exploded in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing at least two civilians and wounding 16 more, police said.

The attack occurred at 8.30am local time in central Kirkuk on a highway near a hospital and municipal building, police Brigadier General Sarhat Qadir said.

The bomber used a Mercedes Benz and the target appeared to be civilians because there were no military or police convoys nearby, Qadir said.

Most of the casualties were people headed to Kirkuk General hospital, police said. Three of the wounded were hospital employees.

The force of the blast toppled a few trees and shattered several windows in surrounding buildings.
