Shaik soon back in court

Durban businessman Schabir Shaik’s application for leave to appeal against his fraud and corruption conviction and 15-year jail sentence will be argued in the city’s High Court next Tuesday.

”It could take 10 minutes or two days,” Shaik’s attorney, Reeves Parsee, said on Monday.

Parsee said he and advocate Francois van Zyl will have to convince Judge Hillary Squires that ”another court might possibly come to another decision” regarding Shaik.

He said Shaik will be in court and that the defence has already filed its papers regarding the application.

On Monday, prosecutor Billy Downer said: ”They have to convince the judge that he erred and we will say why we think he was correct.”

In June, the court found that Shaik and former deputy president Jacob Zuma had a ”generally corrupt” relationship.

Shaik, a long-standing friend of Zuma’s, acted as his financial adviser and all charges against him involved or were related to Zuma.

Zuma was subsequently sacked by President Thabo Mbeki and charged with corruption. His trial gets under way in October. — Sapa
