The Argentinian coach of Mexican First Division giants Cruz Azul was kidnapped on Tuesday, the club’s vice-president announced.
Ruben Omar Romano had just left a training session when five men forced the 47-year-old out of his 4×4 and took him away in another car, according to the vice-president, Alfredo Alvarez, speaking on Mexican radio.
Romano’s vehicle was found several hundred metres from the club training ground.
The team have recently been at the centre of a doping scandal as two of their national side players, Aaron Galindo and Salvador Carmona, were sent home from the Confederations Cup in June for testing positive for nandrolone.
Romano, who has been involved in Mexican club football for years, having coached four other sides, defended them stoutly over the charges. — Sapa-AFP
