Elderly couple remarry after 33-year split

An 81-year-old Portuguese woman remarried her former husband, who is 10 years older, on Thursday, more than three decades after she left him because of his womanizing, a daily newspaper reported.

“He behaved badly and out of jealousy I left him after three years. Now he is more calm, he doesn’t run around with other women,” Silvina Azenha told Correio da Manha.

“Despite everything, he was always the big love of my life. In the 33 years that we were separated, we never stopped talking to each other,” she added.

Azenha married Manuel de Oliveira, who was left weakened by a heart attack last year, in the late 1960s after a six-month courtship, but the couple only got officially divorced 12 years ago, the paper said.

The couple decided to re-established their relationship three years ago and have faced opposition to their plans to remarry from the children they both had with other partners after their split, Azenha said.

“They don’t accept this new marriage of ours. They think it is a joke,” she said.

“Love doesn’t choose ages. We want, and we will be, together as long God allows us,” she added. — AFP
