Singh pulls out of PGA event

Vijay Singh, the defending champion at the Deutsche Bank Championship, pulled out of the $5,5-million PGA event on Tuesday.

”I have always defended a title on the PGA Tour and I am greatly disappointed I won’t be able to do so in Boston,” Singh said.

”This tournament is very special to me and I hope to return to Boston in 2006.”

The 42-year-old Fijian/Indian suffered back spasms while playing table tennis with his son, Qass, at their Ponte Vedra Beach home.

He was examined by a doctor and his condition will be re-evaluated during the weekend before deciding on his upcoming schedule.

Last year, Singh won the event by three strokes to overtake Tiger Woods for the number-one ranking and end Woods’s record run of 264 weeks in the top spot. — Sapa-AFP
