Disgruntled worker shoots manager, self at airport

A man fired for insubordination and intimidation shot his manager and then himself in a cargo section of Johannesburg International airport on Friday, police said.

The 27-year-old man had attended a disciplinary hearing at Express Air Services, Superintendent Eugene Opperman said. He was fired.

After the hearing, he produced a firearm and shot his manager, a 57-year-old man, in the head and chest.

The man then shot himself in the head and died on the scene.

His manager was rushed to the Milpark hospital in a critical condition.

The company confirmed the shooting in a brief statement but would not expand on the incident.

Airport spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan said the shooting took place in a public cargo section that is ”totally removed” from the airport precinct. — Sapa
