A Working on Fire (WoF) team is standing by to demobilise after cooler weather and rain put an end to fires in Limpopo, spokesperson Val Charlton said on Wednesday.
”The WoF people have been called back to Tzaneen and will be demobilised tonight,” she said on Wednesday afternoon. ”As soon as the temperature drops, and there is rain, it is easier to get the fires under control.”
Charlton said it is not yet known what damage the fires have caused.
”We do not have a damage report available, but we will send one out as soon as we have got all the feedback. It can take a couple of days to estimate the damage and costs,” she said.
Fires were reported in the grassland and savannah Vaalwater area, which includes a game reserve, and the Ga-Modjadji area north of Tzaneen.
WoF is a national programme established to promote an integrated approach to fire management. It is supported by national, provincial and local government, as well as commercial forestry and conservation agencies. — Sapa
