Insig takes top Pica

Insig magazine out of New Media Publishing has won the Rossi Trophy for the best consumer title in the country. The announcement was made at last night’s Sappi Pica Awards, hosted by Sunday Times columnist Barry Ronge. Finweek, entered under its former name Finance Week, was a virtual runner up in the category with a ‘highly commended” mention.

Said the judges: ‘Insig is highly focused and idiosyncratic. It is beautifully presented with a contemporary layout and world-class coverage of a range of diverse issues. The photography is elegant and powerful, and the covers in particular make you want to pick up the magazine.”

Journalist Les Aupiais commented: “Insig showed a high standard of consistency, synergy and focus, with stories that demanded to be read. The pictorial content was extremely good and the layout elegant and sophisticated. It simply stood out from other submissions, it didn’t matter if you were Afrikaans-speaking or not.”

The Watling Trophy for best business-to-business magazine went to The Dairy Mail, published by AgriConnect. There was no highly commended mention in the category. Taking the best customer title was Good Taste out of Converge, with the highly commended mention going to the magazine’s erstwhile legal rival Woolworths Taste, published by New Media Publishing.

The award for excellence in magazine design went to another New Media Publishing title, Visi. The Philip Tyler Trophy for innovation in magazine publishing went to The Property Magazine, out of Media Nova.

The chief judge of the 2005 Sappi Pica Awards was Roy Paulson, former managing director of Times Media Limited and the Sowetan. Paulson was responsible for launching the Johncom magazine division and is currently a director of Primedia Publishing.
