Rookie offspinner Botha reported for chucking

South African offspinner Johan Botha was reported for chucking in his Test debut, which ended in an eight-wicket defeat on Friday to Australia.

The 23-year-old from Johannesburg bowled 12,3 overs on Friday, taking the wicket of Matthew Hayden (90) and returning 1-77 as Australia cruised to 288-2 chasing 287 for victory.

South Africa team officials confirmed umpires Aleem Dar and Billy Bowden had reported Botha’s bowling action to ICC match referee Chris Broad.

He can continue to bowl in the limited-overs tri-series starting on January 13 against Australia and Sri Lanka while his action is under review.

Botha could be ordered to undergo remedial work on his bowling action if a six-week review finds that his technique is illegal. – Sapa-AP
