Tshwane mayor low on list, PE mayor dropped

The African National Congress (ANC) has published its national consolidated list of candidates for all municipalities for the 2006 local government elections due to take place on March 1.

While most incumbent mayors appear to top the proportional representation lists in their respective municipalities, Nelson Mandela metro mayor Nceba Faku does not appear at all on the list while Tshwane Mayor Smangaliso Mkhathswa appears at number four slot.

The top spot on the Tshwane (Pretoria area) list is held by Khorombi Dau. In the Nelson Mandela metro — which includes Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and

Despatch — Bicks Ndoni heads the proportional list.

While ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama said in a statement on Wednesday that mayoral candidates would be announced ”in due course”, those topping the

proportional lists are likely to be the mayoral candidates.

Cape Town’s mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo appears at the top of the proportional list of the 105 candidates while Ekurhuleni (East Rand) mayor Duma Nkosi and Johannesburg mayor Nkosiyakhe Amos Masondo also appear at the top of their area lists — as does Buffalo City (East London area) mayor Sindisile MacLean.

Ethekwini (Durban area) mayor Tembinkosi Obed Mlaba tops the ANC’s proportional list.

A full list of candidates can be found on the ruling party’s website at www.anc.org.za
