Perhaps it stems from a premonition on the part of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) or maybe it is simply a coincidence, but the only two mid-week PSL matches feature the teams involved in a tense battle for top spot in the league.
Mamelodi Sundowns, who shade Orlando Pirates only by virtue of a superior goal difference, face up to Santos at Loftus on Thursday night, with the Buccaneers up against special rivals Jomo Cosmos at the Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong earlier in the day.
Sundowns, in particular, need to dispel a gnawing assessment after the loss against relegation-threatened Bloemfontein Celtic that their squad of expensive players currently lack the determination and grit to take advantage of the string of inviting opportunities that have come their way to reclaim the top spot in the PSL.
But, if anything, the task facing Pirates on Thursday appears of a more difficult nature, with Jomo Sono’s team demonstrating an impressive element of professionalism and cohesion in a goalless draw with Chiefs last weekend.
Coach Sono, in addition, approaches all games against Pirates with a bitter-sweet intensity, having enjoyed his finest hours as a player with the Buccaneers.
However, the recent signing by Pirates of long-time Bafana ball wizard Siyabonga Nomvete appears to have revitalised the Buccaneers and a battle royal is in the offing.
Sundowns will be heartened by the return of key right-flank players Josta Dladla (midfield) and Vuyo Mere (defence), who missed the Celtic game through injury and a suspension respectively.
But if ever the Brazilians need to demonstrate they are capable of dealing with the heat when the temperature rises a couple of extra degrees in the soccer kitchen, the time is right now. — Sapa
