Unions reject revised Telkom offer

Unions have rejected a revised Telkom offer on profit-sharing and service awards, the company said on Friday.

The fresh negotiations had not been well received by the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) and Solidarity, said Telkom personnel chief Charlotte Mokoena.

Telkom workers are also represented by the South African Communications Union (SACU).

The revised offer included improved long-service awards, compression of grades and increased gain-sharing — by more then 400% for the lowest paid workers, said Mokoena.

The offer was made on condition employees do not strike next week, she said.

Unable to proceed with negotiations, Telkom handed copies of the revised offer to all three unions.

While the SACU earlier accepted Telkom’s offer, Solidarity and the CWU had threatened to strike if Friday’s discussions did not lead to a resolution.

The CWU described Friday’s meeting in a media statement as ”nothing more than one of their [Telkom’s] gimmicks orchestrated to deceive workers and the outside world.”

The union said it planned to go ahead with its march from the Union Buildings to Telkom’s head office in Pretoria on Monday, and undertake a national stay-away until Tuesday. – Sapa
