Minister of Provincial and Local Government Sydney Mufamadi will visit flood-stricken areas in Taung, North West, on Thursday, his office said.
Spokesperson Zandile Nkuta said a total of 543 houses were affected in the community of about 182 000 people.
”We are doing all we can to assist the community with immediate needs. Air support has been provided to supply the affected people with food and clothing,” Mufamadi said.
He said an assessment on the extent of damage to infrastructure will be carried out, and government assistance will be given to rehabilitate the area.
A disaster-management team is expected to be on standby in the area and will continue to monitor the situation.
Trucks have also transported supplies of paraffin, wood and food to flooded areas.
A task team spent Tuesday assessing the needs of people in villages where rising water destroyed houses.
Paraffin was on the list of priorities because many affected people did not normally make outside fires and paraffin stoves were widely used.
Helicopters will continue to assist with the logistics. — Sapa
