Cape Town council ‘keeps options open’ over Mgoqi

The City of Cape Town is not considering an urgent court interdict barring city manager Wallace Mgoqi from going to work, but is keeping its options open, a lawyer for the city said on Friday.

”Nothing is considered at the moment, but the mayor will review the matter on a day-to-day basis,” said Carl Lindenberg.

Lindenberg was asked what further action the city contemplated to get rid of Mgoqi after a letter from mayor Helen Zille on Thursday requesting him to vacate his offices was ignored.

Mgoqi, who is engaged in litigation with the city over moves to oust him from an extended one-year contract, was at work again on Friday, as he has been since the council ruled to revoke his contract.

The Cape High Court will hear the city’s application to rule on the validity of Mgoqi’s contract on May 9.

Mgoqi had his contract extended by former mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo but has been increasingly sidelined by the city, with Zille accusing him of being obstructionist and of trying to unseat the city’s Democratic Alliance-led coalition government. — Sapa
