Jazzed up

Just when I’m entirely sold on a huge vehicle such as the Chrysler 300C, I come across an equally impressive small car that makes me question my predilection for larger vehicles.

The Honda Jazz, which has scored top marks in the JD Powers and Associates customer satisfaction survey for two years in a row, now has a more powerful model in the range that is aimed at attracting a clientele looking for more performance … and it’s an amazing little vehicle.

The 1,5 litre VTEC adds to the range of 1,4 litre DSI models and comes in five-speed manual and with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) ”automatic” that transforms into a seven-speed manual with gear-shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

Of course, as is expected of a Honda, the gear changes on the manual are smooth and quick and the CVT box proved to be quite a lively performer. Put your foot flat on the accelerator and the revs drop down to about 5 500rpm before changing- into the next gear. This set-up allows one to get the full benefit of the 81kW of power and the 143Nm of torque.

The gear changes on the CVT are seamless. No jerky changes, no sticky transmission — just easy performance from low down all the way through to its top speed of 184kph.

The Jazz is an easy vehicle to drive and is as impressive in traffic as it is on the open road.

It looks much the same as the 1,4 litre model, with slight changes including inset fog-lights, deeper side-skirts and a spoiler on top of the tailgate.

Inside, the new Jazz can seat four adults comfortably and this is partly due to the fact that the fuel tank is situated under the seats.

The rear seats are what Honda refers to as ”magic seats”, since the bottom of the seat is capable of being folded upwards in the same way cinema seats fold towards the backrest. This gives the Jazz a tall loading area in addition to the 353 litre boot.

Creature comforts include air-conditioning, electric windows and a front-loading CD player with controls on the steering wheel. Safety features include anti-lock brakes and dual front airbags.
