Durban man crushed by waste-disposal truck

A worker was crushed by a six-ton rubbish truck in Durban on Friday morning.

A Netcare 911 spokesperson said it appeared that the 40-year old man had slipped off the side of the moving Durban Solid Waste truck. The truck, weighing nearly six tons when empty and 10 tons when fully laden, drove over him.

The spokesperson said the wheels had driven over his pelvic area. He said when paramedics arrived on scene the man’s heart had stopped. The paramedics managed to resuscitate him, but he died shortly after arriving at St Augustine’s Hospital.

Durban Solid Waste spokesperson Neeri Govender confirmed the incident, which happened in Durban’s North Beach area, but could not provide any details. The man’s name has not been released. — Sapa
