One of the many thrilling items on this year’s Arts Alive programme in Johannesburg is Freedom to Dance, a huge party that brings together house, hip-hop and kwaito at prime party spot Carfax in Newtown on Friday September 2.
On the same night, some of Africa’s best performers will be on stage at Africa Unites at Mary Fitzgerald Square, including Zimbabwe’s Andy Brown, Angola’s Bonga, Manou Gallo and le Djiboi from Cameroon, and Nigeria’s Kunle Oluwojure, as well as South African performers Tu Nokwe and the South African Music Award-nominated Zamajobe.
Topping the bill at Freedom to Dance is highly regarded hip-hop DJ Poska, who hails from France. Also expect to see European deep-house man Mr V in action, as well as MC Big Ali, who has opened for the likes of Usher and Nelly Furtado.
Local stars on the hip-hop decks will be Yfm’s Naked DJ and Waxxy, and kicking out the hip-hop beats live will be Amu, Mr Selwyn, Wicked and the South African Music Award-winning Brown Dash.
On the house front, also hear DJs Fresh, Monde and Vinny da Vinci, among others.
Freedom to Dance starts at 9pm on September 2. Africa Unites starts at 8pm on September 2. Tickets are R80 and R160, respectively, at Computicket. More info: www.artsalive.co.za
