Two sentenced for assaulting Robert McBride

Two of three men accused of assaulting Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride were on Thursday found guilty and sentenced by the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the three were also accused of reckless and negligent driving and failing to comply with the lawful instruction of a metro police officer.

”The accused had failed to stop on the instruction of the chief of police after driving recklessly through at least four traffic-light-controlled intersections in Pomona, Kempton Park.”

Kgasago said the men later stopped and assaulted McBride.

The men had filed counter-assault charges against McBride, but the director of public prosecutions declined to charge him and allowed charges against the three to stand.

Kgasago said the driver, Mike Mabogoane, was found guilty of reckless and negligent driving and fined R3 000 or six months’ imprisonment and R1 000 or six days’ imprisonment for failing to comply with the instructions of an officer.

Mabogoane was also sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for resisting arrest and six days for assaulting an officer, both suspended.

Accused number two, Corus Hlongwane, was sentenced to 12 months for resisting arrest and six days for assaulting an officer. Both sentences were suspended.

The third accused, Stanley Mabusela, was discharged, Kgasago said. — Sapa
