Valke fly high against poor Pumas

The Falcons scored six tries to one to run out comfortable 36-8 winners in their Absa Currie Cup clash with the Pumas in Witbank on Friday night.

The Falcons were never really in trouble, although they did go behind to an 18th minute Pieter Benade penalty.

Three minutes later, though, the Falcons got their first try through fullback Riaan Viljoen and they barely looked back as they simply swamped the hitherto winless Pumas.

Another try by centre Riaan Hefer on 25 minutes was just reward for the visitors, who were in command despite struggling in the scrums. That put them up 12-3.

But when Pumas scrumhalf Ashieq Wise crossed the line minutes before the interval that became 12-8 and the game was well and truly on.

The second stanza belonged entirely to the team from Brakpan as they ran in a further four tries to clinch the bonus point and move above the Lions into sixth place on the log.

The Falcons managed to sway the momentum in the scrums their way when Piet Grobler replaced Philip Lemmer and that laid the platform for them to run riot.

The pick of the tries was when replacement Yannick Wombo profited from great work by Hanno Coetzee for the bonus point-clinching try.

It could probably have been more, but the Pumas played the off-side line to full advantage and thus thwarted many promising attacks to the chagrin of the Falcons coaching staff. — Sapa
