Students at the University of Limpopo went on strike on Tuesday following deadlocked negotiations with campus management, the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (Pasma) said.
Spokesperson Mametlwe Sebei said in a statement that black students were ”unjustly treated” by university management.
”It has been discovered that a privileged few white students are exclusively accommodated at better-off residences while African students are residing in dilapidated residences, which leave much to be desired.”
He said students were also unhappy about ”unjust annual fee increments and financial and academic exclusions”.
”Students are refused to sit for their supplementary examinations whilst those at Medunsa, which is part of this university, are allowed to do so like any other institution.”
Sebei said Pasma is awaiting the outcome of Tuesday night’s meeting between the university management and students to decide on further action.
”The management has been called to address a mass meeting because they have ignored an earlier memorandum from the union, which addressed student problems.
”We hope they won’t respond as arrogantly to students as they did with the union.”
University spokesperson Kgalema Mohuba declined to comment. — Sapa
