Durban robbers make off with empty cash boxes

Armed robbers in Durban shot two security guards before fleeing with empty money boxes in a botched cash-in-transit heist on Thursday.

Inspector Gerhard van Rooyen of the serious and violent crimes unit said the armed men started firing shots in Durban’s Umlazi Shopping centre, wounding two security guard from KZN Security Services.

The two gunmen took the money boxes from the security guards and fled.

However, the two money boxes taken were empty as the guards were on their way to the bank to collect money when they were shot and robbed.

ER 24 spokesperson Neil Noble said one of the guards was admitted to Entabeni Hospital with five gunshot wounds to his legs and abdomen.

He reportedly was in a critical but stable condition.

The second guard was shot in the wrist and leg. Noble said his condition was serious, but stable.
