Fundraising dinner nets Zuma R500 000

A fundraising dinner in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, has raised more than R500 000 for African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Sunday.

Among those attending were the provincial leadership of the ANC, provincial ministers, mayors and business people.

Zuma thanked the ANC’s Mpumalanga branch for its efforts and its support during his court battles.

”…The support here has been quite phenomenal. This really makes me feel indeed a very proud member of the African National Congress,” he said.

The Citizen on Wednesday reported ANC spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama

as saying that the party’s national office ”knew nothing” of the dinner, which he said was in violation of the ANC’s policies, if it had in fact been organised in the party’s name.

He said that a fundraising event for an unemployed ANC member was ”unheard of” in the party.

The paper reported that those attending the banquet had been asked to pay between R500 and R5 000 to hear Zuma speak. – Sapa
