Swallows notch up victory in extra time

After playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation time, Moroka Swallows beat Benoni Premier United 2-1 in extra-time at the Germiston Stadium on Sunday to move on to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Cup.

Swallows led 1-0 at half-time. They were the first to score in the 27th minute when striker Evans Gwekwerere beat United goalkeeper Noel Yobou with a low shot.

United coach Sonas Malope made a double substitution in the second half and introduced Goodenough Mvundla and Katleho Loke for Sibusiso Zwane and Bernard Parker.

The fresh legs did the trick when United striker Obinna Okafao beat Swallows goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe with a stunning header a minute from the final whistle to force the extra time.

After both sides failed to break the deadlock in the first 15 minutes of extra time, it was Gavin Hunt’s charges who took control in the second period.

They were rewarded when Swallows midfielder Lefa Tsutsulupa scored the winner in the 116th minute, ensuring his team’s quarterfinal entry. — Sapa
