Cellphone networks must brace themselves for stiff competition when mobile number portability (MNP) comes into effect on Friday.
MNP will allow users to switch between networks while keeping the same number, and none of the networks will charge porting fees.
Cell C chief Jeffrey Hedberg said Cell C has decided to bear the cost on behalf of those wishing to move to the network in order to make MNP affordable to all.
”We have been waiting and waiting for number portability,” he said, blaming Vodacom and MTN for delaying it for months. ”Finally they have lost and customers are now free to keep their cellphone number and choose any of the three network operators as their provider.”
Vodacom confirmed that it, too, will not charge any port fee.
Spokesperson Dot Field said Vodacom is ready and will embrace MNP. ”All systems are in place and everything has been tested. We look forward to welcoming new subscribers to the Vodacom network,” she said.
Virgin Mobile spokesperson Nicholas Maweni said: ”We can’t wait. We can’t wait for the freedom of people to change networks while keeping their numbers.”
He said it could not have come at a better time, as it is the festive season.
MTN spokesperson Bernice Samuels said MTN expects to be a gross recipient of users switching to new operators.
All network operators will be required to pay an administration fee to the Number Portability Company, which will act as the porting hub and facilitate the porting process. — Sapa
