Mathe to get revamped jail cell

Mozambican national Annanias Mathe will be moved to a revamped cell at Pretoria’s C-Max prison once he has been released from hospital, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday.

Mathe, who faces more than fifty charges including murder, attempted murder, rape, hijacking and armed robbery, escaped from the country’s most secure prison over two weeks ago.

He was wounded and re-arrested on Monday after a car that he stole was tracked to Tembisa on the East Rand.

An employee of Altech Netstar, the company which tracked the car, chased Mathe, and was stabbed in the face during a tussle. Shots were fired, and Mathe was hit in the buttocks and legs.

The Department of Correctional Services said Mathe will be moved to the prison’s hospital as soon as an operation to his leg is complete.

Security at his cell will also be tightened.

Meanwhile Mathe’s court case was postponed on Tuesday.

He was charged in absentia for escaping from jail. A new court date is still to be determined. — Sapa
