Kaizer Chiefs added to AmaZulu’s relegation woes when they beat them 2-0 in their Premier Soccer League (PSL) encounter at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday.
The game started on a high note with Chiefs putting pressure on their hosts, but they failed to penetrate a stubborn-looking AmaZulu defence.
Both sides missed numerous scoring chances in the opening exchanges.
With Chiefs enjoying most of the possession, Ditheko Mototo’s cross found Kaizer Motaung Jnr unmarked, and he headed the ball into the back of the net from an acute angle in the 17th minute, beating advancing AmaZulu goalkeeper Kanako Camara.
Chiefs took to the field without five regular players, namely Cyril Nzama, Rotson Kilambe, Shaun Bartlett — who were all injured — and Emmanuel Ngobese and Thabo Mooki, who started the match on the bench.
AmaZulu had three clear chances during the game.
Dumisani Ngwenya missed a golden opportunity to put his side on level terms in the 24th and 48th minutes. With only Chiefs keeper Rowen Fernandez to beat, Ngwenya opted to balloon the ball over the goal.
David Radebe scored the second for Chiefs.
It was Chiefs’ second consecutive victory, and not only did it improve their PSL log standing, but it will probably be the perfect tonic ahead of their much anticipated derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
In other matches played on Wednesday, Brazilian scoring ace Marcos de Jesus took Wits University to a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United and top place in the Premier League, Pirates avenged their Telkom Challenge Knockout loss with a 3-2 victory against Santos and Benoni United beat Cosmos 1-0. — Sapa
