Railway security guards shot dead at Umlazi

Two security guards at a Durban railway station were shot dead and robbed of a shotgun, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe said the two men were on duty at the Zwelethu railway station in Durban’s Umlazi area on Thursday night when a group of four armed men approached them and opened fire.

Both guards were killed instantly. One sustained a gunshot wound to the head while the other sustained fatal wounds to his body.

Radebe said that both guards were armed, but only the shotgun belonging to one of the guards was taken.

The names of the two men, aged 26 and 28 years, have not been released.

Radebe said the motive for the attack is unknown and a murder docket has been opened. — Sapa
