Woman jumps five floors from burning flat

A 25-year-old Bloemfontein woman, Michelle van Deventer, was seriously injured when she jumped five floors to escape a fire in her flat on Monday, police said.

Inspector Lorraine Kalp said the incident happened at 5.20am.

”She was admitted to the Medi-Clinic hospital in Bloemfontein in a stable, but serious condition.”

Hospital spokesperson Amanda Appelgryn said Van Deventer, who turned 25 on January 1, was being treated in the intensive-care unit for multiple injuries, including various fractures.

”She is still critical.”

A friend of Van Deventer, Tiaan Badenhorst (24) was on Monday afternoon also still being treated in the same unit for burns and smoke inhalation.

”He also suffered from shock, but is in a satisfactory condition,” Appelgryn said.

Kalp said forensic investigators were still trying to establish the cause of the fire at the flat in Unie Avenue in Bloemfontein.

”Being in the intensive-care unit at hospital, police have not had time to take statements from the two people,” Kalp said. — Sapa
