Police on Wednesday recovered the body of a 13-year-old girl who was apparently raped and then thrown over a cliff in Durban’s Molweni area.
The police search-and-rescue unit had to retrieve Londi Mdunge’s body, which had fallen nearly 60m down a cliff overlooking the Inanda Dam.
A man was arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with the attack on the girl.
The girl was reported missing late on Tuesday night, and her mutilated body was discovered early on Wednesday morning by local residents.
Crowds gathered to watch police recover the body.
The commander of the Hillcrest police station, Senior Superintendent Bheki Zondi, said a post-mortem would be carried out on Mdunge’s body, and police were questioning witnesses in the area.
He said no decision had been made on whether the 21-year-old man who was arrested would be charged. ”At the moment we are dealing with allegations by the community. We have to first have the evidence,” he said.
A cousin of the girl, Promise Mdunge, said: ”We were collecting mangoes yesterday [Tuesday] and then we went to wash them. I never saw her again.” — Sapa
