Pedestrian torn to pieces on freeway

A pedestrian was run down and ”torn to pieces” by several cars on the R24 freeway between the OR Tambo International Airport and Johannesburg on Sunday night, Ekurhuleni Metro Police said.

Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said the man, believed to be around 35-years-old, crossed the freeway near a pedestrian bridge when he was knocked down.

”Several other vehicles drove over the body, tearing it to pieces,” Nhlapo said.

The man has not been identified and it was not known where he had come from.

Nhlapo appealed to pedestrians to use the bridge over the freeway, rather than crossing it. He said it was illegal to cross a freeway on foot.

”Last year we arrested everybody we saw crossing a freeway on foot, but they just don’t want to listen,” Nhlapo said. – Sapa
