South African cricket bosses are expected to provide some clarity on Monday on incidents during the Test match between the Proteas and Pakistan in Centurion.
Proteas coach Mickey Arthur said these included apparent abusive comments by a South African player, which were picked up by the stump microphone on Sunday.
Arthur, selector convener Haroon Lorgat and Proteas media manager Gordon Templeton were to view footage of the incident, and a statement was expected on Monday.
The abusive language was reportedly sparked by unruly behaviour by some members of the crowd. Seven members of the public were evicted from the stadium on Sunday for repeated misbehaviour.
Lodge Security events manager Trevor Jacobs said this came after the SA team complained about members of the public swearing at them.
Three people were questioned, and two, who admitted swearing at a member of the team, were ejected.
”Alcohol plays a role in a lot of the misbehaviour at the ground,” said Jacobs.
”We try to reason with people, but if their behaviour persists, we make them leave the stadium.”
Beeld newspaper reported a Protea batsman said the Pakistani supporters were ”behaving like animals”. This was picked by the stump microphone.
He apparently also spoke of ”fucking Pakistanis”, the newspaper said.
Arthur said the alleged incident had not been referred to the match referee.
”But there have been e-mails, there have been complaints. It’s something we don’t like happening, and it’s certainly is something the South African team doesn’t stand for,” said the coach.
”But I think we need to review it, and review the context in which the remarks were made. Gerald [Majola, CEO of Cricket South Africa] knows about it, and I think the statement must come from him.”
Monday is the final day of the Test match, with South Africa requiring 130 runs to win. – Sapa
