Beckham’s wages ‘resented’ by teammates

David Beckham’s multimillion-pound contract with the LA Galaxy has sparked resentment amongst his new teammates according to midfielder Peter Vagenas.

Former England captain Beckham, currently at Real Madrid, has signed a five-year deal with the Major Soccer League club worth £128-million and is due to arrive in the United States at the end of the current European season.

”I think, as we all are fans of soccer, he is David Beckham and a wise man told me you’re worth what you negotiate,” Vagenas told BBC Radio Five on Friday.

”But at the same time, of course there’s resentment, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t.”

Vagenas, a holding midfielder, has been with the Galaxy for six years and was a member of the US football team at the 2000 Olympics. The BBC reported his wages as being in the region of £63 000 per year.

”He’s not stealing the money,” added Vagenas of Beckham.

”On the one hand more power to him and on the other you say ‘why can’t I be getting some of that?’.”

According to the BBC, Beckham’s contract means he will be earning 500 times more each week than most of his Galaxy teammates. – Sapa
