Santos do Ajax a favour

Santos did neighbours Ajax Cape Town a favour on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium when they beat Silver Stars 2-0 after leading 1-0 at the interval in their Premier Soccer League encounter.

The win keeps Ajax at the top of the log, one point ahead of Stars.

Stars were outplayed by Santos, with Wayne Roberts in the Santos goal having little work to do while Wayne Sandilands in the Stars goal was called to make numerous saves and could not be faulted for the two goals he conceded.

In the 16th minute Dipsy Selolwane passed to Thando Mngomeni, whose first time shot was well saved by Sandilands.

The visitors were often caught by the offside trap, the main culprits being Simba Marumo and Sanlu Davids.

Santos opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Selolwane passed to Erwin Isaacs, whose first-time shot was unstoppable.

The home side came close on several occasions to increasing the score but found Sandilands in top form.

The visitors, through Marumo, did get the ball in the back of the net, but Marumo was well off side.

Santos went further ahead in the 55th minute when Isaacs broke through and his shot was palmed by Sandilands. The ball then rolled to Selolwane, whose shot rocked the back of the net. — Sapa
