Durban ward councillor gunned down

A Durban ward councillor was gunned down on Friday afternoon as he arrived at a house he was apparently selling in the Merebank suburb, paramedics said.

Rajah Naidoo, the councillor for ward 68 in the eThekwini municipality, died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said Naidoo had four wounds to the chest, stomach and arm, but it was not immediately clear how many times he had been shot as a number of the wounds may have been caused by the same bullet.

Senior police officials, including members of the organised crime unit, were on the scene.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe said Naidoo had apparently received a call from an unknown woman asking him to come to the house.

When he arrived outside the house, two armed men approached him and shot him down. The men ran away from the scene, at which a large crowd later gathered. The motive of the shooting was not known.

The Durban organised crime unit had taken over the investigation, Radebe said. — Sapa
