Winnie robbery accused to appear in court on Friday

Two domestic workers accused of stealing jewellery worth R4-million from the home of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will appear in the Orlando Magistrate’s Court on Friday, said police.

The former African National Congress Women’s League president and ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela found two safes had been stolen and a third tampered with at her Orlando West home on her return from an overseas trip on Monday evening, said Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini.

There were no signs of a break-in and nothing else seemed to have been taken from the home.

He said the man and woman were arrested at the house on Wednesday morning.

Police denied earlier reports that the pair were found in possession of the jewellery and that police had confiscated it.

Madikizela-Mandela’s home is protected by CCTV cameras, walls, on-site security personnel and dogs.

Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday that the cameras were broken and had not yielded any clues. — Sapa
