Silver Stars beat Jomo Cosmos 2 -0 in a heated Absa Cup game to qualify for the last 16 played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.
Stars led 2-0 at halftime.
Stars put their dismal Premier Soccer League form behind them and were in control of the game throughout.
Stars striker Dale Studziski scored the opener in the fifth minute with a diving header and their young Botswana striker, Jomo Motlhating, made it two in the 20th minute.
Referee Jerome Damon had to stamp his authority on the game in the second half when both sides were guilty of dangerous tackles. Stars’ Michael Khaile was shown the red card in the 50th minute and three minutes later Mokete Tsotetsi of Cosmos received his marching orders for a bad tackle.
The outstanding player of the match was Stars’ Zimbabwean international goalkeeper, Katini Tapau, who pulled off many fine saves.
Supersport United beat Winners Park 2-0
Meanwhile, Supersport United beat Winners Park 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.
Supersport led 1-0 at halftime.
Supersport opened the scoring in the fifth minute via the head of James Chamanga after receiving a cross from Daine Klate.
Park nearly equalised in the 53rd minute but Subusiso Nhlapo’s strike was well saved by Andre Arendse.
In the 69th minute Park’s goalkeeper Makwene Mayala did well to save a penalty taken by Ricardo Katza.
However, Supersport’s Katlego Mphela scored soon after in the 74th minute after a goalmouth melee. – Sapa
