A group of men armed with rifles and pistols robbed a Coin security van collecting money at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) head offices in Auckland Park on Friday, Johannesburg police said.
Police spokesperson Captain Bheki Mavundla said a white Ford Bantam bakkie was seen pulling up behind the security van at 11.15am inside the public broadcaster’s complex.
The Coin driver went inside to collect money and an SABC guard was held up at gunpoint at a gate at the corner of Canary and Stanley streets by a man who had initially asked him for directions.
”The same man who had asked for directions pulled out a 9mm pistol, pointed the gun at the stomach of the guard and told him to keep quiet or he will shoot,” Mavundla said.
On his return the Coin driver was held up by a man dressed in blue overalls as he was about to put the money box into the van.
The driver was told to open the box.
Two other men appeared with rifles and forced the second Coin guard out the van, said Mavundla.
An undisclosed amount of cash and two firearms belong to the Coin security guards were stolen.
Police believe six men were involved in the robbery.
The robbers fled in their bakkie, which the SABC reported had been hijacked earlier in the SABC complex. — Sapa
