Mamelodi Sundowns went through to the quarterfinals of the Absa Cup when they beat Maritzburg United 1-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday. The half-time score was 0-0.
The only goal of the match came from substitute Patrick Apataki. The striker came on for Lerato Chabangu in the 88th minute and scored almost immediately from Surprise Moriri’s pass.
The visitors controlled the entire game but missed more than a dozen scoring chances. Ezrom Nyondoro peppered the Maritzburg goal, but failed to hit the target.
Midway through the first half, United were unlucky not to be given a penalty when Nyandoro handled the ball inside the box.
The visitors should have won this game by a bigger margin, but they squandered their chances.
