Stellenbosch deputy mayor questioned over licence

Stellenbosch deputy mayor Khulile Shubani has been questioned by police in a probe into a driver’s-licence scam, according to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

It said Shubani confirmed he was summoned to the Bellville South police station to explain how he obtained his licence. No charges were levelled against him, but he was asked to complete certain forms to assist the police in their investigations.

Police spokesperson Captain Elliot Sinyangana said the police would not comment on an ongoing investigation.

The national Department of Transport and the special investigating unit have been conducting a nationwide probe into licence fraud.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Nebo vehicle testing station in Limpopo had been closed amid allegations of corruption.

The SABC also reported that a former employee from the Limpopo department of transport was arrested in Cape Town in a sting operation against fraudulent driver’s licences. Authorities said the man was linked to 2 500 cases of fraud between 2001 and 2005. He was arrested during a joint operation between the department and the police’s anti-corruption unit.

A spokesperson for the department in Limpopo, Obed Langa, told the SABC the suspect allegedly operated nationally, issuing fake learner’s and driver’s licences and roadworthy certificates.

He was arrested at a vehicle testing centre in Goodwood near Cape Town, where he was employed.

The man is expected to be charged with fraud and should appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon. — Sapa
