At least 39 people were killed when a bus carrying textile-factory workers collided with a truck in Lesotho’s Leribe district, police said on Tuesday.
Lesotho mounted police spokesperson Inspector Pheello Mphana said the bus, which was carrying 103 people, collided with the truck and trailer at 7pm on Monday evening on the road between the town of Maputsoe and the village of Fobane, about 70km north of Maseru.
He said 39 people were killed in the crash. The remaining 64 passengers’ injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening.
Three critically injured passengers were transferred to Maseru’s Queen Elizabeth II Hospital.
Mphana said the cause of the accident was still being investigated, but it is believed that speeding could have played a major role. — Sapa
