A petrol-bombed truck burned out and three petrol bombs were thrown at police vehicles in Khutsong on Wednesday, North West police said.
Superintendent Louis Jacobs said residents had started throwing stones and burning tyres in the morning.
Three petrol bombs were thrown at police Nyala armoured vehicles but did not cause major damage, he said.
A petrol bomb thrown at a truck caused it to burn out at about 11am.
Jacobs said there was constant stone-throwing at police.
Extra police officers were brought into the area, he said.
Meanwhile, South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported that Khutsong, Wedela and Fochville commuters were left without transport after taxi operators suspended services at midnight.
More than 600 taxi operators in the area, running about 1 500 taxis, resolved to stop operations until late on Thursday afternoon.
Three teachers and a principal accused of instigating pupils to boycott classes at Khutsong were expected to appear before the education department’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday.
The four are charged with misconduct.
Lessons have been disrupted at schools in Khutsong for more than a month as part of protests against the incorporation of the Merafong municipality into the North West.
